Adjustments and self-help care can often make the difference. Remember, “pain is not caused by a dietary insufficiency of aspirin or other pain medications.” Every day that you are in pain is one day too long. If you suffer from pain, don’t delay in setting up an examination at Virginia Spine Care Chiropractic. Once the source of your pain is identified, Virginia Beach Chiropractors Dr. Jay Berkowitz and Dr. Thomas Skelton can help to correct the underlying cause.
Disc Injury and Degeneration – A bio-mechanical lesion, either from a traumatic event or repetitive trauma, usually initiates the pain syndrome. The disc and associated structures are the major cause of pain and neurological malfunction. Disc deterioration follows the bio-mechanical lesion due to disruption of the normal physiology of the disc tissue. The fluid exchange ratio within the disc is disrupted. The disc fluid exchange ratio is the amount of fluids pressured out of the disc during weight bearing activities in relation to the amount of fluids absorbed by the disc during non-weight bearing activities. Increased pressure stops the inflow of water, nutrients and oxygen and disc regeneration begins.Bio-mechanical lesions also activate muscle fiber receptors resulting in muscle reaction and contraction (tightness, cramping, and spasm). Prolonged muscle contraction or spasm results in increased disc pressure even when in a non-weight bearing position. This compounds and accelerates the problem causing desiccation or a drying out process of the disc fibers.Disc degeneration begins with a decrease in the disc spacing from break-down and tearing of disc fibers. Tear sites allow the disc nucleus to migrate outward resulting in a disc bulge or herniation. This inflammatory response produces neurotoxins resulting in increased pain.
Virginia Beach Chiropractors Dr. Jay Berkowitz and Dr. Thomas Skelton vs. Medication
Medication and anti-inflammatories give temporary relief at best. Prolonged use of these drugs can result in serious side effects such as stomach ulcers, kidney failure and liver disease. Manipulation and physical therapy can also relieve pain but until the spinal disc is decompressed, recurring episodes with ever increasing pain intensity may follow.
Dr. Jay Berkowitz and Dr. Thomas Skelton are Virginia Beach Chiropractors that can help relieve and fix subluxation.
Virginia Spine Care Chiropractic understands that subluxation is a disease condition of the spine, just as diabetes and heart trouble, for example, are disease conditions. The difference lies in the fact that subluxation often causes other conditions to occur. Subluxation causes stress or interference to the nervous system, interfering with the functions of the body and, therefore, interfering with normal health.
Subluxation is a misalignment of bones, resulting in joint dysfunction and nerve pressure or irritation. Subluxations of the vertebrae of the spine are by far the most common type. Even the slightest misalignment can produce pressure and irritation to nerves, effecting improper communication of vital nerve impulses to the organs, cells, and tissues of the body. The greater the misalignment, the greater possibility of it affecting a nerve. The more severe the subluxation, the more discomfort, pain, and often disabling the illness that can result.
There are two kinds of subluxations: (1) An acute subluxation is produced from a traumatic incident or physical exertion (2) A chronic subluxation is of long duration from a condition that stabilized but was not corrected and can cause severe symptoms and degeneration. The longer a subluxation is allowed to remain uncorrected, the more extreme the resulting condition can become. Subluxation is the leading cause of spinal arthritis.
